With a cast of stars, the film follows along, backstage, with a radio program trying to survive in an age of television. Tommy Lee Jones plays the part of a new owner of the Fitzgerald Theater (from where the program is broadcast) threatening to demolish the building. Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin play the part of a twosome: The Johnson Sisters; Lindsay Lohan is Meryl`s suicidal daughter who wins her chance to sing on the show, only to forget the lyrics to the song on stage; Kevin Kline plays a private detective seeking employment as a doorman and acts as narrator for the plot; Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly play another twosome in the persons of hilarious cowboys Dusty and Lefty; Virginia Madsen is an angel in search of one of the broadcasters, and Maya Rudolph, a trainee who gets pregnant. The script writer and here, also, actor, Garrison Keillor, co-author of the plot, presents the radio program of the same name, in real life.
