David Gale, a professor at the University of Texas is campaigning for a ban on the death sentence. He is falsely accused and condemned for rape and the murder of an activist, Constance Harraway, a provocative student with whom he had an affair. Both were part of the Deathwatch campaign. He is arrested and gives his version of the facts to a reporter four days before he is to be executed. Bitsey Bloom, the reporter, believes that Gale is not guilty. To gather evidence, Bitsey has the help of a journalist friend
