“One day I opened my fridge, and took good look at a can of pineapple. It had been made in the Philippines, packaged in Honolulu, and distributed in San Francisco. It was a perfect illustration of the economics of multinational companies”. That’ how Amos Gitai describes what led him to make a documentary on the various facets of the production and industrialization process of one of the most popular tropical fruits in the world. The film traces the history of the pineapple, from the Europeans‚Äô first contact with the fruit when Columbus discovered America in the 15th century to its widespread consumption through Portuguese, Spanish and English traders. The documentary explores some curious facts like the high per capita consumption of pineapple in non-producing countries such as the US and Japan. It also shows state-of-the-art pineapple processing methods of a pioneering company in Australia, a pineapple packaging division in Hawaii and the crops in the Philippines.
