We follow the stories of the players of Gayvotas Futebol Clube, a women’s football team formed in 1983, during the military dictatorship, in the year in which the sport was regulated for women in Brazil, after being banned for 40 years. With the support of renowned players of that time, such as Casagrande, Pita and Wladimir, these women face the prejudices of a conservative society. At the same time, they deal with their personal and family problems, and prepare for a symbolic and international game against the Italian team.

“Onda Nova” was presented at the 7th Mostra, in 1983. Soon after, it was banned by the military regime’s censorship and was only released almost a year later.

“Onda Nova” was restored and remastered in 4K by Julia Duarte, Aclara Produções Artísticas and the family of José Antonio Garcia, with the collaboration of Cinemateca Brasileira/SAC – Sociedade de Amigos da Cinemateca, Zumbi Post and JLS Facilidades Sonoras.
