How I Killed a Saint (2003)

After years living in the USA, Viola, a young of 25, returns home and finds her family and her country in a state of chaos. NATO troops have occupied Macedonia in an effort to keep the peace. The girls’ younger brother, Kokan, is getting involved in terrorism, moved by very distorted patriotic ideals. Their parents ignore the family’ problems and waste their time in illusions. Their grandfather, who used to be a revolutionary, nows spends his days just watching TV.
Aware that her parents have put all their hopes in their “American daughter”, Viola does not tell them the real reasons for her return. She tries to keep contact with her alienated brother, following him as far as the frontier, where he intends to meet a guns‚Äô smuggler. Along the way, a police operation separates the two brothers. Alone and scared, Viola is submitted to all kinds of humiliations at the check points she passes before getting to arrive back home. Kokan also succeeds to return alive, despite having crossed a mined camp. His mission is to put a bomb at the Parliament and detonate it during at the arrival of St. Clemens‚Äô procession. The end of this action will affect violently the lives of the two brothers.
