Regarded as one of the most inspired variations on family relations, the film maker’s favorite subject. After a funeral ceremony, as a tribute to her husband, Akiko and her daughter, Ayako, talk about the deceased with friends Taguchi, Hirayama, and Mamiya. The three speculate on the girl’s future and suggest that she marry. Ayako refuses, claiming that she will not leave her mother alone. After a round of golf, the three friends persuade the mother to re-marry, allowing Ayako to feel free to do the same. Taguchi and Mamiya are thinking of their friend Hirayama, also a widower, as the most apt to win Akiko’s heart, Things, however, do not develop as expected, and the plan falls through.
