Separated when they were still children, brothers Enrico and Lorenzo meet up again as adults. The long separation means that few similarities have endured. Enrico, the elder of the two, has become a radical marxist. Lorenzo was brought up by the local aristocracy and attended the best schools. Enrico is very ill, and it is up to Lorenzo to care for him. In addition to bringing the brothers together again, the illness is to afford a reassessment of conduct and of all of the sense of life.
