In Flandres, Demester divides his time between his farm and going on long walks with Barbe, his childhood friend. He is in love with her, in secret, painfully so, but accepts from her the little she has to offer him. Together with other young people of his age, Demester leaves to fight a war in a distant country. Barbarity, fear, and companionship make Demester into a warrior.
