Ventura, a Cape Verde laborer living in a Lisbon suburb finds himself suddenly alone when his wife Clotilde walks out on him. After 34 years in his old quarters, he feels lost, now, living at a new address in low-cost newly constructed buildings in a housing scheme. All of the poor souls he meets there seem to him to become his own children. The film is set in the ruins of the Cape Verde district of Fontainhas, northwest Lisbon and the new Casal da Boba district built by the government on the site of the largest garbage dump in the country. The cast of non-professional actors play their own roles.
