David, a strange, shy musician and a newcomer to Paris, falls in love with Julia, his young student. He tries by every means to win her heart. His landlady, Anne, spurs him on, advises and comforts him with passion. The director composed the plot and the cast like a quartet where each instrument would contrast happily with the other. “I tried to make the melodic line for each character vary from start to finish. My options are based on these combinations of opposition, resonance, and sonority," explains Emmanuel Mouret. He declares himself to be extremely fond of stories of obstinate love. He says that, in the film, he met with the ideal situation to introduce all that attracts him in sentimental discourse: characters brimming with desire, love at first sight, strategy for seduction, change in feelings, defeat, injustice, quarrels, changes in direction and, of course, a great deal of kissing.
