Hermila has lived out 20 of her 21 years in São Paulo. She returns once more to her home town in the interior of Ceará taking with her a newborn baby. She settles in with her grandmother in wait of her husband?s return, but he never arrives. Hermila wiles away her time with strange jobs, out with friends, drinking, dancing. At last she realizes her husband will never come back. In her loneliness she takes up again with a former boyfriend, but feels suffocated in the small town. Spurred on by her new friend, Georgina, a prostitute, she devises a formula for making money. To keep a distance from the family, she adopts the name Suely, and begins life all over again.
