The Chess Players (1977)

The action takes place in Lucknow, capital of Avadh. On the throne is Nawab Wajid, an irresponsible governor, if a fine poet and musician. Mirza and Mir live in the same city, inseparable friends whose only occupation in life is to play chess. A "game of chess", only geopolitical, is being played by the East India Company. The English Governor-General Lord Dalhousie, has decided to use Nawab?s negligence to make the province of Avadh, a British dominion. Mirza and Mir are told that troops in the service of the British Crown are approaching Lucknow. Very much alarmed, the two take refuge in an isolated village far from political disturbance in order to continue to play their games of chess.
