A girl of twelve and her mother have been cruelly repressed by tyranny in Afghanistan. The regime specifies that no woman may leave the house without a legal escort (a male member of the family). With husband and son dead, the mother has no choice but to alter her daughter?s appearance to make her look like a boy. To find work, mother and daughter turn to the milkman, an old friend of the late husband. As from then, the girl is to see life from a very different standpoint. In the religious school, also a military training center, she is aided by young Spandi. He christens her Osama; however, the Taliban discover her true identity and arrest her. The judicial court that advocates stoning and execution of defendants, forces the girl to marry the old Mullah. She is to be the fourth wife and will have to put up with a miserable life. The film was the first Afghan film after the fall of the Taliban regime.
