In a district on the outskirts of the East End in London is a family torn apart by the untimely death of the father. Paul is only ten and already faces responsibilities that are far beyond a reasonable limit for a boy: he takes care of himself, helps to bring up a younger brother, and gives support to his mother, Mel, under heavy medication “for the nerves”, as she says. Lenny is an old friend of the family who appears to care for Mel, but is not all that reliable. Things become complicated when Paul finds the corpse of one of his mother’s friends and realizes that, in truth, Lenny has made Mel into a heroin addict. The boy is obliged to withstand the shock to try and save the mother. And Mel starts on a difficult battle pro de-intoxication.
