Two girls, just over 20 years of age, are immersed in a journey of self-discovery while traveling on a trip through the mountains of Cuenca, in Ecuador. Esperanza, a Spanish tourist, and Tristeza, an Ecuatorian university student are not in search of perfect love or postcard scenery. The journey will show them there is a world beyond their day-to-day lives. Many coincidences mark this journey for the girls who even go so far as to cover stretches of road on foot when a bus strike paralyzes the country. Esperanza wants adventure, while Tristeza will not allow herself to be influenced, for she is very critical in relation to her own country. During the course of the journey, both meet different characters, such as the boy complying with his grandmother?s last wish - to have her ashes cast into the Tomebamba river. There is also an Indian motorcyclist who offers one of the girls a lift, and a lively cuencano living in Quito on his way back to town for a friend?s wedding. These types will change the outlook on the world for both.
