Remissão (2006)
Sobre o filme
A village in the interior of Brazil in the year 1910. Fifteen years after a boy commits suicide, upon the arrival in town of Dr Ulisses, newly-graduated, he locals are amazed at his marked physical resemblance to the boy who died. Conflict ensues in the search carried out in the present for an answer to the past of the suicide victim, mistaking him for the stranger. Dr Ulisses finds himself involved in an intricate jigsaw puzzle, pieces of which are spread among the local population. Incomplete truth from each, associated to latent hipocrisy, is perplexing to Ulisses. He is exposed to attempts on his life and would like to leave, but is prevented from doing so by Dona Antonia, the matriarch of the Santana family, who would like to shed light once and for all on the reasons that led her son Marcos to commit suicide. Ulisses finds himself cornered by Padre Carlos and by Silas` sick jealousy - Silas is a farm laborer in love with Camila that he believes was seduced by the stranger. He is also under pressure from Lia, the sarcastic former fiancée of the suicide victim and by resentful Miguel, his brother. Veteran actress Léa Garcia who acted both in Orfeu Negro (1959) by Marcel Camus and in Orfeu (1999) by Cacá Diegues, is at a very good stage in her cinematographic career: in the last three years, before Remission, she acted in features, namely Filhas do Vento (Kikito for Best Actress, shared with Ruth de Souza at the 2004 Gramado Film Festival), Mulheres do Brasil, and O Maior Amor do Mundo, in addition to the short film Memórias da Chibata.
