Hungary at the start of the twentieth century. Twins, Dodo and Naphtalene are born in a traveling circus and follow in their father?s footsteps as popular performers, as clowns, acrobats, and illusionists. One day, in a performance involving a crocodile, there is a tragic accident and Dodo is accused and arrested, although, in fact it is really Naphtalene?s fault. The twins are then separated for years. While the Cold War grows ever more acute, in the fifties, Naphtalene finds a job with a theater company traveling throughout Hungary and, involuntarily, finds himself embroiled in the revolutionary movement that sweeps the country. He then takes advantage of his new circumstances to visit the prison where his brother is held prisoner with intent to free him.
