In the seventies, Li Chunfen is living in a small rural town in China, working as a bus conductor. She seduces the passengers with her beauty and enthusiasm for life. The bus driver, Cui, secretly in love with her, has also succumbed to her charm. On the bus, Li meets Liu Fendou, a doctor from Shanghai and experiences the pain from first love. Although theirs is forbidden love, they become involved under the vigilance of family and government. Li and Liu are incapable of resisting this attraction for long. Caught in a sexual encounter, they are separated. Li is sent to a labor camp as punishment. She will never again see the doctor. Abandoned by community and family, Cui is Li`s only remaining friend. He expects to safeguard her honor by marrying her. Li accepts but does not feel the same thrill and passion as she felt for the doctor. A tragic accident leaves Cui in coma and Li is once again alone. Li then decides to confront her past and return to the place where she spent her youth and, once again, see her beloved bus line.
