August 1984. It?s high summer. The 23rd Summer Olympic Games are being held in Los Angeles. In a radio program, President Ronald Reagan makes a joke about bombarding Russia. A catastrophic drought ruins the crops in over twenty African countries, and over twenty thousand children die every month at Ethiopia. None of this is of any real importance to young Victor, spending the weekend with his aunt and cousins. They would have no intention of doing anything special were it not for his cousin Denise, age 15, or if it weren?t for the awful dog belonging to the neighbor that had attacked him years before. Very possibly, the incident at the bridge ought never to have occurred…
