In God They Trust

Ainsi Soient-Ils

France 2024 Documentary cor 90 min.

Through interviews, cartoons, and archival images, the documentary questions the idea of blasphemy and how the divine and humor are represented in the three major monotheistic religions, following the perspective of Riss, cartoonist and director of publication of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. He seeks to confront his atheist beliefs with those of the faithful —Christians, Jews, and Muslims— examining issues related to religious intolerance, humor, and doubt. The goal is to show how Riss, acting on his own but with ties to the history of Charlie Hebdo, is able to spend time exchanging views with people whose religious dogmas he has caricatured throughout his career.
