“Shameless” is a documentary, a musical starring Maria Alcina. The singer embodies transgression and freedom in a very genuine way. A victim of censorship, she has fought to remain an artist after being labeled as “just another Carmen Miranda”. She connects with the most popular aspects of Brazilian music: singing the double entendre “calor na bacurinha,” serving as a judge on talent shows, and in her current sophisticated work. The film recreates this journey in a musical format, in which Alcina narrates and performs her own story, using rich archival material and musical numbers that position her as, perhaps, the greatest living heir to the Brazilian Teatro de Revista and chanchada traditions.
