The Kara family is from Turkey, but has lived in Zurich, Switzerland, for many years. The father, Abdullah, commands his three children with a firm hand. The mother, Emine, tries to balance her husband’s rigor with her affection. The two oldest children adapted well to both cultures, Turkish and Western. But the youngest, Burak, does not feel like he belongs to any of those worlds. The boy decides to dedicate himself to the Koran. At first, the parents feel proud —and only realize Burak’s extremism too late, when the kid flees to the holy war. Abdullah travels to the frontier between Turkey and Syria to look for his son.
