An ambitious and strict adaptation of the literary masterpiece of the same name by writer and poet Paul Claudel (1868-1955), the original version being almost seven hours long. In this film by Manoel de Oliveira, the plot, once more, revolves around love thwarted. Doña Prouhèze, the wife of a nobleman, nurtures a deep love for Don Rodrigo, who is forced to leave Spain, bound for America, where he is to be vice-roy. The king determines that Doña Prouhèze govern a citadel - Mogador, in Africa. Prouhèze sends Don Rodrigo a letter, but he is to read it only years later. Rodrigo leaves the New World bound for Mogador where he plans to find Prouhèze once more. Ten years go by and he meets Sept-Epées, Prouhèze?s daughter.
