Sokurov’s documentary, made as part of his renowned “elegy” series that consists of a free and lyrical format akin to an elegy and invented by Sokurov himself, focuses on Tarkovsky’s exile during the 1980s. The fi lm visits the place where the director lived and episodes linked to his funeral. At the time, Sokurov was still being branded as “Tarkovsky’s disciple”, something he has always emphatically rejected, despite the fact that the director of Stalker intervened directly with the authorities to allow Sokurov’s fi rst feature fi lm to be screened in Russia. Screenwriter Tonino Guerra, who penned Nostalghia (1983), also appears in this fi lm that was edited by Ludmila Feganova, a long-time collaborator of Tarkovksy’s in many of his feature films.
