Born in Salvador, Bahia, Antonio Pitanga is a key figure in Brazilian culture and a significant presence in the activism of black culture. At the 40th Mostra, in 2016, he was honored with the Leon Cakoff Prize. As an actor, he has appeared in numerous plays and soap operas. He was one of the pillars of the Brazilian Cinema Novo movement, and acted in films by directors such as Glauber Rocha, Cacá Diegues, Alex Viany, Ruy Guerra, Rogério Sganzerla, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Neville D’Almeida, Fernando Coni Campos and Antonio Carlos da Fontoura. He also directed the feature film “Na Boca do Mundo” (1978). “Malês” marks his return to directing after 45 years.
