Born in Moscow in 1945, he began his acting career at the age of 14. He studied cinema at the VGIK. One of his early directorial works, “Slave of Love” (1976), pays homage to silent movies. His film “An Unfinished Piece for Player Piano” (1977), based on Chekhov’s work, won the first prize at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. He directed “Dark Eyes” (1987) in Italy, and he traveled to Mongolia to film “Close to Eden” (1991), which won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival. “Anna” (1994) was a portrayal of his daughter, and “Burnt by the Sun” (1994) won the grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for best international feature film. “12” (2007) was nominated for the best international feature film at the Academy Awards. He also made “The Exodus: Burnt by the Sun 2” (2010), which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
