International Perspective
Spring 1999, Serbia. Eight-year-old Sava and his mother live in a high-rise apartment in Belgrade. The father is away, working on a cargo ship, while the small family tries to maintain a semblance of normal life under international sanctions. Their life is disrupted by the beginning of the air campaign against Serbia. The bombing begins in the atmosphere of tension and despair. A state of emergency is declared. Sava’s school is closed and residents of his apartment block begin to gather at the air shelter, which soon becomes his second home. As he watches the girl he’s in love with walk away, his behavior begins to change.
